Stacked. Went out for a Brooklyn stroll one day. Nothing all that special. Just needed to get lost in solitude and admire my surroundings. One of the spots I got visual inspiration from was taken at a local, Brooklyn grocery store. I saw stacks of products spilling out of the door, forming masses of disordered detail and pattern. I kind of…really, loved it! If you think about it, it’s design from a naturally occurring event. These events are all around us, every day. We do it. The world does it. Design is unpredictable. It’s funny how we all forget to notice.  So here’s some visual inspiration. Let it remind us to be inspired every day,  by the simplest and most unpredictable things. Cool? Cool!

When my mom came to visit me here in Brooklyn, she stopped to admire the tree against the white and black building. This was at night, mind you, because the street lamp made the tree look like it had white leaves. Then she said, “Let’s walk on that side tomorrow so we can take pictures.” But after she said that, I was like, “…or now.” lol  Her excitement confirmed our mother-daughter similarities since I’d always tell my friends to admire the beautiful building with me when we’d pass by it. But when Autumn came, the building became the loveliest background for this overlooked tree. Anyways, HAPPY AUTUMN, FOLKS!

Japanese Sculptor, Takao Sakata, displayed his installation up at the AG Gallery / Store here in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.  This post is long overdue…oops!
I was walking around Williamsburg and stumbled upon this quaint boutique filled with great Vintage. What was really cool is that it’s a half boutique and half art gallery. Walking a bit further through the store, you walk straight into this gallery taken up but Takao’s installation. He told me how he wanted to recreate an underwater world one can be a part of. The glass hanging in mid-air are glass blown fish, hung by fishing wire from the ceiling. In the middle is a suspended branch with more glass work. Beneath that is sand, with fragments of broken glass fish. Takao was kind enough to give me a piece, the one that I am holding, as a gift.

A picture of young designer, ERIN BARR, in her beautiful, Brooklyn studio.
I just started working with her and all I can say is that she is amazing, talented, and inspiring! I’ve never been so excited to work with someone as great as her.  Especially working in this ruthless Fashion World, she is an outlier about to do great things. The ‘cut-throat’ environment that the Fashion Industry notoriously reaks of is, for the most part, true and forces for unhealthy lifestyles and conditions. Believe me, I’ve seen it and whatever, I’ve paid my dues. But ‘Cut-Throat’ could be done in another light and l’m glad to hear about new up-and-coming companies take it in a positive route. They’re companies that stem from kindness, compassion, and of course, being undeniably DOPE (don’t fake it till you make it). A workplace that thrives off this is a natural stimulant for employees to give their best work, thus gaining top results for the company. (Maslow’s Theory of Motivation is a great source for this) Erin, whether she knows it or not, is changing it. I’ve never thought I’d be THIS willing to push myself all because of kindness and mold to her specific aesthetic and process. People who show kindness and compassion will certainly get kindness and compassion in return… as well as the best WORK from their team. I will grind to the best of my abilities because I genuinely want to help someone like her out.
I wish all success and happiness for her.

Public Guitar chained to a subway bench!

I originally thought someone had left it there, thinking they were crazy to forget something like that. But I was wrong. People can be so generous at times. Lol

If you ever take the G line in Brooklyn, stop at Carroll St. station and you’ll find it.

The sunday of Hurricane Irene just seemed to be the day to drink indoors and be absolutely carefree! You’re warned to stay in-doors and…stay in-doors. So what happens? A lazy room-mate bonding day happens!
Cooked gourmet PB&J’s, hehe, Spanish tapas, drank whiskey on the rocks and Vino all throughout the day. We watched Woody Allen films and French movies as we work on our portfolios, designs, and branding my little line. Oh! And you can’t forgot the long conversations that start 30 minutes into the movie you’re currently watching. haha It’s important to do all this at the same time and in the most RANDOM order possible because that’s the most ideal LAZY day one can have. ;)
Anyways, at about 9pm, I decided to talk a walk outside and see if people are out. Of course, EVERYONE was out. In the midst of fallen trees limbs, pushed-over wooden walls, and upside down bicycles, people were somewhat celebrating outside. A few were intoxicated from drinking all day, restaurants and bars were open, and even my favourite Book Store, that I found myself at for an hour, were all open. It was pretty cool to see everyone break free!
So thank you Irene for giving us the excuse to be absolutely carefree, it felt like vacation.
